Schedule: USS TEXAS Battleship Overnight Program
Arrive at 5:30 - 5:45 p.m.- Plan to eat your evening meal before arriving, or you can eat on the park grounds if you wish. You will be greeted at 6pm and given overnight parking permits for your vehicle. Next, we gather around the picnic tables at the park gift shop to finish paper work, collect fees, etc. Then we divide in to groups to begin the tour with your designated tour guide. Now the adventure begins! We stress military procedure and military conduct and we have fun! Upon boarding the ship - your group’s flag is raised (if you choose to bring one) and flown during your stay. While touring-we inform campers about safety, history of the ship, how the ship was built, and how life was aboard the ship.
Approx 9:15 p.m. - we meet in the Dreadnaught room to view a documentary video about the ship. (Please bring snacks and soft drinks for the campers during the film). Next the campers are off on an “Informational Scavenger Hunt” to find the answers to a questionnaire given to them. The highest scoring camper of this “Hunt” has the privilege of being the “Officer of the Deck” the following morning. We must ask permission from this “Officer” to leave the ship the next morning. (Of course a few adults never salute correctly the first time so they are asked to go to the back of the line-to try again).
Approx. 10:00 p.m. - “Taps” is played and it’s off to the bunks for the campers. “Firewatch” is set in to place at this time. Sleeping areas are air conditioned and/or heated.
6:30 a.m.-“Reveille” is sounded and it’s time to get up, go to bathroom, brush teeth, etc.
7:00 a.m. – A catered breakfast is served: choice of Breakfast Taco, Pancakes and Sausage on a stick, or Cereal, your choice of Orange juice, Milk and Coffee (for the Adults). While the campers eat breakfast they can watch a silent movie taken aboard the TEXAS in 1931.
8:00 a.m. – “Morning Colors”, Raising of the US flag.
8:10 a.m. - Tour main deck, Navigation Bridge and places that the public does not go.
Approx. 09:20 Graduation Ceremony: Held in the Ward Room as the campers names are called they receive graduation certificates & patches. Time is taken to learn how to salute properly when leaving the ship.
Pack gear - Lower flag. 10:00 a.m.“ish” – Depart the ship by presenting a proper salute.
Bring: Form #3-4 completed for all staying aboard, snacks and drinks for 9pm Battleship video time, group flag, sleeping bag/pillow or other, 1 or 2 flashlights, mosquito spray (seasonal). Dress accordingly - listen to weather report, have fun!
